At a housewarming party on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest, one of the hosts has a fatal accident while serving cocktails. This is a book that is purely a fun time filler. Most of the characters in the book are well fleshed out and fun to follow. Roger and his lover Jack have invited several guests to their hill top mansion for Roger’s birthday party. Once all the guests are gathered the murders and mayhem begin. Our “sleuth” is Deputy Willard who arrives on the scene, despite the weather having trapped everyone inside the hill top mansion. Most of the characters are gay. One character is a very bitchy and homophobic woman. There is also an intellectually challenged young boy. The characters, to me, are all believable. Some are more flamboyant than others. The house becomes a character of its own with its own history and secrets. I did have to read a few paragraphs repeatedly to understands the layout of the house at times. The writing flows smoothly and is well written, in my opinion. G. Toby King has a pleasant way of creating a visual narrative in the mind’s eye. I could easily see this a gay B movie of the week. That said I am looking forward to reading more works by this author.Product details

So this is why gave it a five (and yes there is one thing I didn't care for). This is a book one reads purely for fun. It's like a better version of a Nancy Drew Mystery. All the required elements are in the book. Roger has invited several guests to his hill top mansion for a birthday party. Of course as their hired cars drive over an old bridge, a major storm washes it away so the guests are conveniently stranded in the house. And the murders start, but the bodies keep disappearing. Fortunately Deputy Willard from the little hick town is able to use a rope and get across the swollen river to be able to investigate the bizarre goings on. I should mention that all the characters are gay (except one very bitch women and a intellectually limited young boy who is something of a houseboy. There is also, of course, a drag queen, a Russian Mafioso, a lesbian couple and so on. King seems to have fun drawing these characters with all their bad behavior. Of course the house has its own secrets to be discovered. My one complaint is the dozen of times that grammatically challenge Deputy Willard says "you-ens." So...this is a book not to be taken seriously but to just enjoy for the humor, the interesting characters and the relationships. The writing is smooth and the actions moves along well. The author did borrow his solution from Agatha Christie but that can be forgiven.
